Department of Education Reduces Required Attendance By Ten Days

On Thursday morning, the Mississippi Department of Education voted to allow schools to waive ten days of the required 180 instruction meeting requirements.

The decision comes on the heels of many school districts postponing the return to traditional instructions by choice or executive order. This waiver will allow schools to not have to worry about meeting the 180 day requirement when making final decisions about restart dates.

The finalization of the terms of this waiver will come on at the planned August 27 meeting of the Board of Education. At this meeting, issues around pay for teachers, administrators and hourly employees will be discussed.

The 180 instruction days requirement can be met during the 2020-2021 school year by traditional, hybrid, or virtual learning.
