Baldwyn Junior Shadows Speech Pathologist at Elementary School
Claire Kelly, a junior at Baldwyn High School, had the opportunity to shadow speech pathologist Sydney Williford at Baldwyn Elementary School on Tuesday.
Speech-language pathologists assess and treat speech, language, and communication disorders to help students succeed academically. They collaborate with teachers and parents to improve articulation, fluency, vocabulary, social skills, and comprehension through direct therapy, classroom support, and the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), according to school officials.
These professionals focus on all aspects of communication, from speech sounds to understanding directions, reading, and expressing needs. Their goal is to ensure students have access to the curriculum regardless of communication challenges.
Kelly shared her experience, saying, “I am so grateful for my opportunity to shadow at the elementary school. It was such a nice environment, and I loved being around all the kids and seeing what it’s like helping them. I think it’s so special to be able to help kids with their speech. This experience really pushed me to learn more about speech therapy and definitely put it among my top career options.”
