MDWFP works to remove invasive aquatic plants from Percy Quin State Park lake

Fisheries staff from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks have spent the past week removing invasive aquatic plants from Percy Quin State Park’s Lake Tangipahoa. The effort focuses on water hyacinth and Cuban bulrush, which can quickly spread and outcompete native plants.

Invasive species like these can restrict access for boaters and anglers while harming the health of the lake ecosystem, according to MDWFP. Controlling their spread helps protect the lake and maintain recreational opportunities.

The department also urges the public to follow the “Clean, Drain, Dry” protocol. Anglers and boaters should clean gear, drain all water from equipment, and dry everything before moving between water bodies. This practice is considered one of the most effective ways to slow the spread of invasive species and safeguard Mississippi’s waterways.
