Mississippi conservative criticizes lawmakers over education bill rejection
A Mississippi conservative has voiced frustration after lawmakers rejected a key education bill, accusing Democrats and some Republicans of working against conservative priorities.
The critic, who has spent 23 years opposing liberal policies and the Mississippi Democratic Party’s approach, said the state’s political landscape has shifted since Republicans gained control in 2011. They credited those years with the Mississippi Miracle, a period of improved education results attributed to conservative legislative efforts.
The critic expressed disappointment in Lieutenant Governor Hosemann and Senator Dennis Debar for their roles in killing the legislation. They alleged that these officials collaborated with Democrats to block the bill, which they described as a shared Republican priority across the country.
The critic also criticized the process, claiming the lawmakers attempted to hide their actions from conservatives on a deadline day. They described the Mississippi Senate Education Committee as a place where conservative priorities are often sidelined and Democrat influence persists.
