Utility crews in Mississippi are continuing efforts to restore power after winter storms left about 48,000 outages statewide, down from a peak of approximately 180,000, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
Damage assessments are ongoing across 51 counties. The agency reports that 337 homes, 24 businesses, and 20 farms have been damaged or affected. Additionally, 20 public roads have sustained major damage, while 62 have minor damage. These numbers are expected to change as assessments continue, officials said.
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the night, especially in northern parts of the state. To aid those without heat, 93 warming centers and shelters are open in 51 counties, serving roughly 1,230 people. Residents are encouraged to visit the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency’s website for a list of locations.
Mississippi has deployed additional personnel and resources to impacted areas. Forty-one counties have submitted 677 requests for assistance. Updates on road conditions are available through MDOT and Mississippi Highway Patrol media alerts.
State officials expressed gratitude to utility workers, emergency responders, volunteers, and local officials working to recover from the storm. The effort remains ongoing as the state navigates the aftermath of the severe winter weather.
