Mississippi declares State of Emergency ahead of winter storm
Mississippi officials have declared a State of Emergency as a winter storm is expected to hit the state Friday. The declaration will remain in effect through at least Jan. 27, allowing for increased mobilization of resources to support local response efforts.
State agencies have deployed generators, water, roof tarps, blankets, pillows, and cots to counties requesting aid. Local governments are opening warming shelters, and state coordinators are working closely with emergency managers to identify any gaps in preparedness plans, according to officials.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said it is in contact with utility providers statewide. Forecasts indicate ice accumulation could impact power lines, potentially causing outages. Utility companies are preparing for outages and aim to restore power quickly if they occur.
Mississippians are advised to monitor weather updates and prepare for freezing temperatures, sleet, snow, and freezing rain. Officials recommend staying off roads when possible, as highway conditions may become hazardous. The Mississippi Department of Transportation is already preparing highways for winter conditions.
