Mississippi Department of Wildlife Restores Water Quality at Shadow Lake

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) has applied 300 tons of agricultural lime to Shadow Lake at Roosevelt State Park. The effort aims to improve water quality and support aquatic life, according to an MDWFP news release.

Lime helps balance the water’s chemistry and enhances the effectiveness of nutrients. This process encourages the growth of phytoplankton, small algae that form the base of the lake’s food web, the agency said.

These algae provide essential food for young fish during their early development stages, which can lead to stronger fish populations and better recruitment. The improvements are expected to result in increased fish growth, more abundant fish, and enhanced fishing opportunities over time, MDWFP added.
