Mississippi faces widespread power outages and injuries amid severe winter weather

About 128,500 residents in Mississippi are without power as winter storms continue, according to utility officials. The number may fluctuate as crews work to restore service.

The Greenville Fire Department reported that 10 people were injured when a canopy collapsed above gas pumps. All were transported to hospitals with major or minor injuries. This brings the statewide total of storm-related injuries to 13, the department said.

Forty-six warming centers are open across 35 counties to assist residents affected by the weather. The Mississippi Department of Transportation has made progress clearing ice and snow, especially in North Mississippi and the Delta region.

State officials remain in contact with local emergency managers and have requested additional supplies from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Requests include 10 truckloads of water, two of meals, blankets, and cots each. Three heaters have been installed at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Ripley, and 26 generators are operational at various sites, including warming centers and correctional facilities.

The Mississippi National Guard is supporting logistics efforts, using aircraft and ground units to deliver supplies. A mission is underway in Alcorn County. Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing tonight, prompting residents to stay off the roads and prioritize safety.
