More than 100 children under 15 took part in a youth turkey season kickoff at Leaf River Wildlife Management Area in South Mississippi on Saturday. The event, called JAKES Day, was organized in partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Participants engaged in turkey call demonstrations led by professional experts and learned gun safety from MDWFP conservation officers. The day aimed to promote outdoor recreation and turkey hunting among young people.

Kids received various giveaway items, including firearms, kayaks, and turkey hunting gear. The event was supported by local sponsors and community partners, according to MDWFP.

The department expressed gratitude to everyone involved and wished success to all participating youth for the spring turkey season.
