Mississippi House approves Education Freedom Act, heads to Senate

The Mississippi House of Representatives has approved the Education Freedom Act, also known as House Bill 2, and now it advances to the state Senate for consideration. The bill received bipartisan support after more than four hours of debate, according to House leadership.

Supporters praised lawmakers who voted in favor, highlighting leadership from Jason White, Education Chairman Roberson, and Representative Jansen Owen. House Speaker Jason White thanked colleagues who chose to do what was best for children and families instead of taking the easier path of opposition.

Support for the bill extends beyond the House. It has garnered backing from the White House, Gov. Tate Reeves, most statewide elected officials, faith-based organizations, business leaders, and the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women, according to White.

White expressed optimism that the Senate will work with the House to advance the legislation, which aims to expand educational options for Mississippi families. He emphasized the bill’s focus on what is best for children and future generations.

As the bill moves to the Senate, advocates hope bipartisan support will ensure the legislation’s passage, bringing increased educational choice to Mississippi students.
