Mississippi reports 23 deaths amid ongoing winter storm response

Two more deaths have been reported in Panola County, bringing the statewide total to 23, according to local officials. Authorities urge residents to pray for the families affected by the loss.

Utility crews are working to restore power, which has decreased from about 180,000 outages at the storm’s peak to roughly 55,800. Seventy-five generators are in use at critical infrastructure sites, including three deployed to the Burnsville water system in Tishomingo County. Some generators are being moved as power is restored.

Temperatures remain below freezing in much of the state, especially in North Mississippi. The Department of Health reports 93 warming centers and shelters are open across 51 counties, serving around 1,220 people. Residents without heat are encouraged to use these facilities. Mississippi has received 662 requests for assistance from 41 counties. The state has distributed more than 275,000 bottles of water, nearly 94,000 meals, and thousands of blankets, cots, and tarps to impacted areas. The Department of Health continues to operate two medical needs shelters and treat 24 patients, including refilling oxygen cylinders and deploying nurse strike teams.

Transportation crews reopened northbound and southbound lanes on I-55 at exit 233 in Yalobusha County after utility crews repaired power lines. The Mississippi National Guard is assisting with road clearing, refueling, and distributing supplies. Other agencies, including wildlife and forestry departments, are supporting welfare checks, emergency calls, and debris removal in affected counties.

Community organizations and nonprofits are actively aiding residents. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army operate shelters, while groups like Eight Days of Hope, MS Baptist Relief, Baby2Baby, and God’s Pit Crew provide meals, debris cleanup, and supplies. Donations to support ongoing relief efforts can be made through the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency’s website.
