Mississippi requests federal disaster declaration after severe winter storms

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced he has requested a Major Disaster Declaration from the federal government for multiple counties affected by severe winter storms that swept across the state from January 23 to January 27, 2026.

The request includes provisions for individual assistance, disaster unemployment benefits, and public assistance to support local governments, including debris removal efforts, Reeves said. The state has been working closely with FEMA, state agencies, and local officials to assess damage and ensure the request meets federal criteria.

Reeves emphasized that this is a step forward in the recovery process as Mississippians deal with the storm’s impacts. The state is prepared to use all available resources to aid affected residents and communities. As additional damages are reported and verified, the governor said the request may be amended to include more counties for assistance.
