Mississippi updates on winter storm impact and recovery efforts

Mississippi officials provided an update on the ongoing winter storm impacting the state. A fatality has been reported in Alcorn County, bringing the state’s total deaths to three, according to local authorities. State leaders urged residents to pray for the family affected during this difficult time.

Approximately 143,600 customers remain without power, down from a peak of about 180,000, as utility crews work to restore service. Officials expressed hope that the warming temperatures and sunshine could accelerate ice melting and aid in power restoration efforts.

Road conditions remain challenging due to ice and freezing temperatures, making plowing difficult. In many areas, plowing could cause ice and snow to compact instead of clearing. Authorities are hopeful that warmer weather will improve road conditions and allow for more effective snow removal.

Damage assessments report 21 properties with major damage, 27 with minor damage, and one business with major damage. Additionally, 20 public roads have sustained major damage. So far, 40 counties have submitted 210 requests for assistance. The state continues coordinating with local emergency managers and has requested an additional 30 generators from FEMA, bringing the total to 90.

The Mississippi National Guard is establishing a fuel distribution network. Generators are being deployed to healthcare facilities, nursing homes, warming centers, and rural water systems. Currently, 67 warming shelters are open across 35 counties. Residents seeking shelter are encouraged to visit the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency website for resources. Officials emphasized the importance of checking on family, friends, and neighbors as recovery efforts continue.
