Mississippi wildlife agency honors conservation staff at March meeting

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announced awards for two staff members during its March commission meeting. The agency recognized Buford Lessley as the 2025 Fisheries Conservationist of the Year and Jason Thigpen as the 2025 State Lake Conservationist of the Year.

Lessley, a fisheries biologist and project leader in the Central Region since 2022, has made significant contributions to statewide aquatic vegetation control efforts. In 2025, he responded to giant salvinia in the Pearl River watershed, oversaw work at Ross Barnett Reservoir, and launched a largemouth bass movement study. He also mentored new biologists and contributed to regional projects, according to the agency.

Thigpen, who has more than 20 years of experience, serves as the Central Region State Lakes Supervisor. This year, he focused on improving safety and accessibility at state lakes, supporting staff across regions, and participating in key projects. His efforts included equipment transport, conservation initiatives, and trail improvements at Calling Panther Lake, the agency said.
