Mississippi Wildlife Officials Highlight Tips for Identifying Male Wild Turkeys

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks provided tips for identifying male wild turkeys as part of its Turkey Tuesday campaign.

According to officials, distinguishing an adult male turkey, or Tom, from a juvenile male, or Jake, involves examining three key features. Toms have longer, more pronounced beards, while Jakes’ beards are shorter and less noticeable.

Spurs are another indicator; adult gobblers typically have longer, sharper spurs, whereas Jakes have smaller, less defined ones. The tail fan also differs, with Toms displaying a smooth, even fan and Jakes showing an uneven pattern with longer feathers in the center.

Body size and overall build can also help, as Toms are generally larger and more robust. Officials emphasize paying attention to these features to ensure accurate identification in the field.
