Mississippi woman sentenced to 30 years for attempted murder
VERONA, Miss. — Veronica Gillespie was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder and aggravated assault in Prentiss County, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.
Gillespie, 35, admitted to charges stemming from an August 2023 incident. She also pleaded guilty to an incident from November 2022. Circuit Court Judge Kelly Mims accepted the pleas on April 8, 2026.
Gillespie was sentenced to 40 years in custody for the attempted murder charge, with 10 years suspended. The remaining 30 years will be served. For the aggravated assault charge, she received a 20-year sentence, with 20 years suspended, to run consecutively to the attempted murder sentence, the release said.
The district attorney’s office credited Detective Karl Courtney of the Booneville Police Department for his investigation. The cases were prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Joel Baldwin and Reagan Wise, on behalf of the state.
Jason D. Herring, district attorney for the First Circuit Court District, was also mentioned in the release.
