Trump administration approves public assistance for 18 more Mississippi counties affected by winter storms

The Trump administration approved public assistance for 18 Mississippi counties impacted by severe winter weather between Jan. 23 and Jan. 27, according to a government announcement.

This brings the total number of counties approved for Public Assistance Category A-G to 34. The newly approved counties are Adams, Attala, Benton, Claiborne, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lee, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Union, and Yalobusha, the Department of Homeland Security said.

The initial 16 counties approved include Alcorn, Bolivar, Calhoun, Carroll, Grenada, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Leflore, Montgomery, Sharkey, Sunflower, Warren, Washington, Webster and Yazoo, along with the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

Public Assistance funds will help local governments with debris removal, emergency protective measures, and restoring public infrastructure. The federal aid aims to support Mississippi’s recovery efforts in the wake of the winter storms, the department added.

Officials expressed gratitude for the federal support, with one noting, “Mississippi is grateful for this aid as we rebuild and recover from the severe winter weather.”
