The Booneville Police Department has received a total of $965,852.06 in grant funding through two programs, the department announced. The funds will be used to purchase law enforcement equipment, improve officer and community safety, and bolster school safety preparedness.
The department was awarded $750,000 through the federal COPS Grant, which is fully funded by the federal government with no local match required. An additional $215,852.06 came from the state-matching LEO Grant, which covers half of the costs. These grants will help buy and upgrade police vehicles, weapons, computers, body armor, and other essential equipment.
Part of the funding will be allocated to active shooter response gear and training for School Resource Officers serving Booneville schools. The investment aims to ensure officers are equipped and prepared to respond effectively to critical incidents involving students and staff, officials said.
Police Chief Michael Ramey emphasized the importance of grants in supporting public safety and fiscal responsibility. “Our first responsibility is to protect and serve the citizens of Booneville, including our schools,” Ramey said. “Securing outside funding allows us to make necessary investments while reducing the financial burden on taxpayers.”
Chief Ramey expressed gratitude to city leadership, including Mayor Lori Tucker and the Booneville Board of Aldermen, for their support in securing the grants. “Public safety is a team effort, and strong backing from city officials is crucial,” he said. The department plans to continue seeking federal and state grants to enhance safety, officer technology, and responsible use of local funds.
The department also welcomed representatives from Congressman Trent Kelly’s office, who delivered official notice of the federal grant funds. Present were Jack Kizer, legislative director; Semaj Reed, caseworker; Melinda Whited, staff assistant; and others, along with city officials such as Mayor Tucker and Ward 3 Alderman Jimmy Hicks.
