Mississippi monitors floodwaters as rain warnings persist

Mississippi is monitoring flood risks in several counties as heavy rainfall continues across the region. Authorities are tracking rivers and creeks in Forrest, Hancock, Lamar, and Pearl River counties for active flood warnings, according to state officials.

The Mississippi River remains below flood stage at Greenville, Tunica, Natchez, and Vicksburg, officials said. Meanwhile, several smaller waterways are experiencing fluctuating levels. The West Hobolochitto Creek near McNeill dropped 1 foot overnight to 18 feet. The East Hobolochitto Creek near Caesar fell 4 feet to 15.4 feet.

The Pearl River near Pearl River, Louisiana, stands at 15 feet and is forecast to drop below flood stage by May 31. The Jourdan River at Kiln is at 6.2 feet after falling 1.5 feet overnight. The Wolf River above Gulfport remains at 12.2 feet and is expected to fall below flood stage by May 30.

The Biloxi River near Lyman is at 14 feet, down half a foot overnight. The Leaf River near McLain is projected to crest at 21 feet on May 28, and the Chickasawhay River at Leakesville is expected to reach 25 feet on May 31. Weather conditions and additional rainfall could influence these levels further, officials said.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and local emergency managers continue to coordinate response efforts. Authorities urge residents to stay informed and exercise caution as flood risks persist.
