Mississippi WMAs undergo busy summer preparations for hunting season

Wildlife management areas across Mississippi are bustling this summer as staff prepare for the upcoming hunting seasons. While many hunters countdown to fall, WMA workers focus on habitat improvements and project planning.

Projects underway include timber management, prescribed fire planning, habitat monitoring, and food plot preparation. Staff also plant dove fields, maintain wetlands and waterfowl habitats, and perform road, trail, and infrastructure upkeep.

The summer work aims to ensure WMAs are ready to support both wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. These efforts help maintain healthy ecosystems and improve hunting opportunities when seasons open, the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks said.

Hunters are encouraged to plan their hunts at WMAs, with more information available on the department’s website.
