Woman Returns to High School Equivalency Program After 30 Years, Achieves Success
Thirty years after leaving high school, Shavon McWilliams returned to a classroom with a goal: to earn a high school equivalency diploma through Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Adult Education program, according to school officials.
McWilliams found more than a diploma. The opportunity to continue her education boosted her confidence, leading her to earn a spot on the Vice President’s List, graduate from Northeast, and begin working toward a bachelor’s degree, officials said.
Her story highlights the impact of adult education programs, which officials say open doors, create opportunities, and help students build futures they once thought were out of reach. McWilliams’ journey demonstrates that it’s never too late to start again and that one step into an adult education program can change everything, they added.
