Mississippi DPS names new deputy commissioners and directors

Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell announced Tuesday the appointment of three key leaders to the agency’s top positions. James Herzog has been named Deputy Commissioner and Director of the Mississippi State Bureau of Investigation. Joshua Bromen will serve as Deputy Commissioner and Director of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Division. Jim Brinson was appointed director of the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security.

Herzog, who has served as lieutenant colonel of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation since 2024, brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, including roles with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Following the passage of House Bill 1612, he will oversee the Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Narcotics, Homeland Security Office, and the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory, with Colonel Phillip Pope serving as Deputy Director of the Narcotics Division.

Bromen, who previously led the Office of Public Safety and Planning, has extensive law enforcement leadership experience. Under the new structure created by House Bill 1612, he will oversee the Law Enforcement Division, which manages the Office of Public Safety and Planning, the Law Enforcement Officers’ Training Academy, Driver Service Bureau, and Office of Standards and Training.

Brinson, who has served as interim director and deputy director of the Homeland Security Office, has a background in homeland security, emergency preparedness, and public safety. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran and has specialized in active shooter response, terrorism prevention, and safety training.

Governor Tate Reeves praised the appointments, emphasizing their experience and commitment to public safety. Commissioner Tindell also expressed confidence in the leadership team, highlighting their professionalism and dedication to serving Mississippians.
