A storm in Mississippi has caused severe flooding and prompted emergency responses across the state. A county road crew member was killed in Franklin County while assisting with storm cleanup efforts, according to local officials.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Public Safety, and the Department of Environmental Quality are coordinating with local authorities to manage response efforts. Water rescues have taken place in Harrison County, and multiple roads remain closed in George, Hancock, Harrison, Pearl River, and Stone counties.
The dam at Anchor Lake in Pearl River County is under close watch. Officials say the system is functioning as designed, with water flowing through spillways, but little storage capacity remains. Additional rainfall could overwhelm the dam, and the agency’s dam safety director is en route to monitor the situation and communicate with local officials.
Homes within the potential inundation zone are being notified by Pearl River County Emergency Management. Residents near East Hobolochitto Creek, especially east of Interstate 59 between East Boley Road and West Union Road, are advised to move to higher ground and stay alert. About 30 homes are being evacuated as a precaution.
Authorities urge residents to avoid flooded roads, monitor emergency alerts, and stay safe as crews work in dangerous conditions to manage the flooding and storm aftermath. The state expressed gratitude for the efforts of road crews, first responders, and emergency managers.
