Mississippi Foresters Conduct Timber Inventory at Leroy Percy WMA
Foresters from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks recently conducted a timber cruise at Leroy Percy Wildlife Management Area. A timber cruise involves sampling forest plots to gather data on tree species, size, density, and overall condition.
Because measuring every tree isn’t feasible, foresters use these sample plots to estimate forest characteristics across the larger landscape. The collected data helps inform management decisions and provides insight into the health and composition of the forest.
The information from the timber inventory supports activities such as timber harvesting, stand improvements, prescribed burns, and future planting efforts. These efforts aim to maintain healthy habitats for wildlife and support outdoor recreation.
Timber cruises are a vital tool for sustainable forest management in Mississippi, ensuring forests continue to provide ecological and recreational benefits for years to come, according to the department.
