Mississippi sets spring turkey harvest record with nearly 18,000 birds

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced a record-breaking spring turkey harvest for 2026, with 17,907 birds reported through Game Check. The number exceeds the previous record of 15,498 set in 2024 and is the highest since mandatory reporting began in 2019.

Several wildlife management areas reported historic harvest levels, with some setting all-time records and others reaching levels not seen in more than four decades, according to MDWFP officials.

This season also marked the first year of the Mississippi Wild Turkey Stamp, which generated more than 31,000 hunter contributions. Funds from the stamp will support habitat work and research aimed at sustaining turkey populations across the state.

Officials cited strong hatch success, increased hunter participation, and favorable spring weather as key factors in the successful season. MDWFP plans to continue efforts to ensure quality turkey hunting opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
