Mississippi wildlife officers complete refresher training on large port security vessels

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks officers completed a refresher course on operating their 30-foot twin-engine port security vessels. The training focused on maneuvering larger vessels that differ significantly from other boats in the fleet, making ongoing hands-on practice essential for safe operations, officials said.

The sessions included backing and maneuvering courses, boat ramp loading and unloading, vessel approach techniques, docking procedures, obstacle course navigation, towing, and operational maneuvering exercises. These drills aim to keep officers prepared for patrols, emergency responses, and public safety missions on Mississippi waters, according to agency spokespersons.

As the boating season continues, officials recommend boaters familiarize themselves with their vessels, take certified boater education courses, ensure safety equipment is onboard and functioning, and operate vessels responsibly. They emphasized that proper training and preparation can be crucial when seconds count on the water.

Agency officials urged boaters to prioritize safety and enjoy Mississippi’s waterways responsibly this season.
