Mississippi wildlife officials warn of herbicide-resistant weeds in food plots

Repeated use of the same herbicide can create resistant weeds in as little as three to five years, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Herbicide-resistant weeds are increasingly difficult for wildlife managers, hunters, and landowners to control. These plants survive chemical treatments that once kept them in check, leading to decreased crop performance and less forage for wildlife.

Despite the challenge, officials say proper planning and diverse strategies can help landowners regain control. Recommendations include rotating herbicide modes of action, using cover crops, and improving application timing.
