Farmers and landowners urged to understand seed quality for food plots

Landowners and farmers are encouraged to better understand the true content of seed bags when planting food plots. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks warns that the number on the bag doesn’t always reflect the amount of viable seed inside.

Many seed mixes, especially those containing clovers, include coatings, inert materials, and non-germinating seeds. A 50-pound bag might contain significantly less live seed than it appears, which can impact planting success.

Experts recommend learning to read seed tags and calculating pure live seed (PLS) to ensure accurate planting rates. PLS accounts for both germination rates and seed purity, helping landowners optimize their food plot efforts.
