Red foxes are widespread across Mississippi, inhabiting forests, farmland, and suburban areas, according to wildlife experts. Recognizable by their rusty-red fur, black ‘stockings,’ and white-tipped tails, these animals are also known for their wide range of vocal sounds.
Their calls include a high-pitched, piercing scream used for communication with other foxes, wildlife officials said. These animals have excellent hearing, enabling them to detect small prey moving beneath leaves or grass before pouncing.
By feeding on rodents and other small mammals, red foxes help control local populations. Their presence is considered important for maintaining ecological balance in Mississippi, said conservationists.
