Spring brings increased sightings of young animals in Mississippi

Spring is in full swing in Mississippi, and it is common to see young animals on the move. This includes many fledgling birds that leave their nests before they can fly. These young birds spend days or weeks hopping on the ground, learning to forage while their adult feathers grow in.

During this period, adult birds follow their young and continue feeding them as they develop flying skills. While it is normal to see fledglings on the ground, this time also presents increased risks from domestic pets and other wildlife.

Wildlife experts recommend that people avoid handling or disturbing young animals. If someone finds a bird that appears to need help, they should contact a permitted wildlife rehabilitation center before intervening. More information is available through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
