Wildlife officials in Mississippi confirmed the sighting of a black bear in Wilkinson County last week. The bear was identified as a Louisiana native after tracking her tagged ears, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
The bear, born in Louisiana in 2020, was orphaned as a cub and later rehabilitated before being released on Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area. Now six years old, she was recently captured in Mississippi, fitted with a GPS collar, and is expected to have cubs this spring, officials said.
The incident underscores the collaboration among state wildlife agencies to manage and conserve black bear populations across borders. MDWFP wildlife biologist Anthony Ballard said the sighting demonstrates the importance of tracking and monitoring bears to support their recovery efforts.
Officials noted that the bear’s journey exemplifies how conservation efforts extend beyond state lines, emphasizing the need for coordinated management strategies to support healthy bear populations in the region.
