Mississippi advances black bear research with new technology

Black bear research in Mississippi has evolved significantly, especially in how researchers monitor and study bears in the field, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

For decades, culvert traps have been a mainstay of bear research. These large, mobile live traps lure bears with bait and safely contain them once the door drops. The department continues to use these traps in certain situations, supporting ongoing hands-on research.

In 2023, the department introduced Cambrian traps, automated systems designed by MDWFP Bear Program Coordinator Anthony Ballard. These traps feature cameras, remote-triggered doors, and real-time alerts to improve response times and efficiency for biologists in the field.

Despite the new technology, traditional tools remain essential. Hair snares, which collect DNA samples without capturing the animal, continue to play a vital role in non-invasive research efforts.

From classic field methods to modern automated systems, each tool helps build a clearer picture of Mississippi’s black bear population. The department encourages the public to follow their updates during Bear Week.
