Mississippi officials announced the appointment of Brad McCullouch as district attorney for the Seventh Circuit Court District, which includes Hinds County.
The appointment comes ahead of a special election scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026. The qualifying deadline for candidates is Aug. 20, 2026. The winner will serve the remainder of the current term, officials said.
The appointment aims to maintain continuity in the office and ensure ongoing prosecution of criminal cases. Officials noted that while the criminal justice system in Hinds County is imperfect, the assistant district attorneys do commendable work.
McCullouch has served as an assistant district attorney and, more recently, as the first assistant since 2023. He was temporarily appointed to lead the office on July 1 by Senior Circuit Judge Winston Kidd during the transition period.
His legal career has focused largely on prosecution, including work as a special assistant attorney general. Officials expressed confidence that his experience makes him well-suited for the role and thanked him for stepping up until a new district attorney is elected.
