Mississippi wildlife biologists have been capturing and banding resident wood ducks across the state from July through September. Each bird receives a uniquely numbered metal band on its leg, with information on its age and sex recorded before release.
The banding effort helps biologists gather data on harvest rates and bird movements, which are vital for monitoring wood duck populations. Counting these birds in their dense, forested wetlands is challenging, making banding an essential tool for conservation.
Anyone who harvests or encounters a banded bird is encouraged to visit reportband.gov and submit the band information. Reporting the band allows the individual to learn where and when the bird was banded and contributes to wildlife research and conservation efforts.
