Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks staff recently partnered with Mississippi State University’s Gamebird Extension at Pearl River Wildlife Management Area for a wood duck banding training session.
Over the next few months, biologists will capture and band resident wood ducks across the state. Each duck receives a uniquely numbered metal band on its leg, and biological data are recorded before the bird is safely released back into the wild.
The bands help scientists track harvest rates, survival, and migration patterns. When a banded duck is harvested by a hunter or recaptured by biologists, the data provides valuable insights into the health and movement of Mississippi’s wood duck population.
Wildlife officials emphasize that every band contributes to a better understanding of local duck populations and informs management strategies. To report the harvest of a banded duck, hunters are encouraged to visit reportband.gov.
