The National Mourning Dove Banding Program, launched in 2003, helps scientists understand dove populations and how hunting affects them, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
Each summer, banding occurs across most of the lower 48 states, including Mississippi. Hunters report band recoveries during the fall and winter hunting seasons, providing vital data on survival rates, harvest levels, and population trends.
Banding goals for each state, established by Bird Conservation Region, are based on a statistical analysis to collect sufficient data for accurate population estimates. These reports inform long-term management strategies aimed at maintaining healthy dove populations.
