Mississippi storm damage update: seven tornadoes confirmed, hundreds remain without power
The National Weather Service confirmed that seven tornadoes struck Mississippi on May 6, including two EF3s that impacted Franklin and Lamar counties, according to officials.
As of now, approximately 5,360 power outages are reported statewide, down from a peak of about 20,100, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said.
Damage assessments are ongoing in several counties. Officials report two homes damaged in Forrest County, one injury in Franklin County, and 12 injuries in Lincoln County. Lamar County has reported four injuries, 46 homes, and eight businesses affected. Marion County reported three homes damaged, while Wilkinson County reported five homes impacted. Lawrence and Lincoln counties are still conducting damage assessments.
Shelters remain open for storm victims at the Lamar County Safe Room in Purvis and the Lincoln County Safe Room in Brookhaven. Donation centers have been established at the Bogue Chitto Fire Department and the East Lincoln Fire Department to support survivors. The centers are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency continues to coordinate relief efforts with local, state, and volunteer partners. Tarp deliveries have been made to Lawrence, Lamar, and Lincoln counties, with additional resources expected as needed.
