The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks has launched a safety campaign to mark National Safe Boating Week, focusing on the importance of personal flotation devices. The department encourages boaters to prioritize life jacket safety while enjoying water activities.
Officials highlighted key safety tips, including ensuring life jackets are U.S. Coast Guard-approved, which is indicated on the label inside the jacket. Children 12 and under must wear life jackets at all times when the vessel is underway.
The department also advises checking the fit of life jackets, making sure they are snug when fastened. Proper maintenance, such as inspecting for rips, mildew, and waterlogging, and allowing jackets to dry after use, is also recommended to ensure effectiveness.
Throughout the week, the department plans to share additional safety tips and reminders to promote responsible boating. The message is clear: wear a life jacket every trip, every time, for safety on the water.
