Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks officials are emphasizing a nontraditional use of prescribed fire to attract wildlife. The technique, known as “bow range burning,” involves small-scale, controlled burns conducted within sight of bow stands or turkey hunting locations.
Unlike traditional prescribed burns that cover large areas during the dormant season, bow range burning focuses on targeted areas to stimulate the growth of high-quality sprouts and vegetation. These plants are highly attractive to white-tailed deer during early bow season and to turkeys in the spring, often producing quick results, officials said.
