Northeast Mississippi Community College Unveils William J. ‘Billy’ McCoy Heritage Room

Northeast Mississippi Community College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for the William J. “Billy” McCoy Mississippi Heritage Room.

McCoy, a former scholarship student at Northeast, served as speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives for 32 years. His life was dedicated to education, Mississippi, and his communities, college officials said.

The Heritage Room aims to preserve McCoy’s legacy. It features displays of his legislative career, key decisions that shaped Mississippi, and highlights the impact of one Northeast graduate on the state and beyond.

College officials emphasized that the room is more than a tribute; it is a way to keep McCoy’s story alive for future generations of students and visitors.

Northeast takes pride in its alumni and their achievements, and officials believe honoring McCoy in this way reflects that pride and commitment to community and history.
