Police use license plate readers to track burglary suspects across multiple states

Authorities used license plate readers to track suspects linked to a burglary in Oxford, Mississippi, which involved more than $140,000 worth of jewelry, according to the Oxford Police Department.

On May 16, 2026, officers responded to a residence on St. Andrews Road after the burglary was reported. Investigators found footprints, a partial fingerprint, and surveillance footage showing multiple individuals entering a vehicle that neighbors found suspicious.

Using traffic cameras and license plate readers, investigators tracked the vehicle as it moved through Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois. They discovered the vehicle had entered Oxford with a different license plate, prompting a broader search that eventually led to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The vehicle was stopped in Missouri, where suspects Fabian Ignactio Navarro-Aliaga, 27, and Marcelo Alejandro Telechea-Droguett, 36, both of Chile, were arrested after a foot chase. They face charges of burglary with forced entry in Oxford, along with federal charges and an immigration detainer, the police department said.

Stolen jewelry, firearms, and other items were recovered and are being identified by owners. The Oxford Police Department thanked the Missouri Highway Patrol, Chicago Police Department, and Department of Homeland Security for their assistance. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, with additional charges pending in other states.
