Trump approves federal disaster declaration for Mississippi counties affected by severe weather
President Donald Trump has approved a Major Disaster Declaration for five Mississippi counties affected by severe weather from May 6 to 7, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The storms produced seven tornadoes across the state, injuring 26 people and damaging 425 homes, FEMA said. The declaration authorizes Individual Assistance for Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln, and Wilkinson counties.
Individual Assistance includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-interest loans for uninsured property losses, and other recovery programs, FEMA added. Public Assistance has been approved for Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, and Lincoln counties, providing funds to local governments and nonprofits for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and infrastructure restoration.
FEMA thanked President Trump and his administration for supporting Mississippi’s recovery efforts. State officials expressed appreciation for the federal aid, emphasizing the importance of ongoing assistance as residents rebuild from the storms. Mississippi officials also noted their commitment to long-term recovery and expressed prayers for storm-affected communities.
