Black bears in Mississippi roam amid human settlements, MDWFP urges caution

Black bears are on the move in Mississippi as part of their normal summer behavior, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. Each year, young male bears travel long distances in search of new habitats.

Typically, black bears stay with their mothers for 16 to 18 months before venturing out alone. During this period, they may pass through towns and neighborhoods, often attracted to accessible food sources, officials said.

To reduce conflicts between bears and residents, MDWFP recommends securing trash and compost, removing pet food, storing bird feeders, and cleaning grills and smokers. They also advise notifying neighbors if a bear is seen nearby and emphasize never approaching or feeding the animals. Instead, people should take photos or videos from a safe distance.

Residents are encouraged to report bear sightings through the department’s website at https://www.mdwfp.com/wildlife-hunting/wildlife-species-program/black-bear-program, to help monitor bear activity across the state.
