Tips for Living Safely Around Black Bears
As part of Bear Week, wildlife officials are reminding residents of best practices for coexisting with black bears. Bears have an exceptional sense of smell, about seven times better than a bloodhound, making it crucial to keep attractants away from homes and campsites.
Officials recommend never feeding or approaching bears, securing garbage and recycling, and removing bird feeders when bears are active. Pet food should not be left outdoors, and grills or smokers should be cleaned and stored properly.
Community members are also advised to alert neighbors about bear activity to prevent conflicts. For more information on living with bears, visit https://bearwise.org/.
