Habitat Management Strategies to Reduce Wildlife Predation

Predators are an inevitable part of most landscapes, but their effects on prey species depend on habitat conditions, according to wildlife experts.

Habitat management can play a significant role in reducing predation and supporting wildlife reproduction. Opening overstory canopies allows more sunlight to reach the ground, promoting understory growth.

Prescribed fire is another tool used to create early successional habitats that benefit nesting and brood-rearing. Dividing property into burn units with different fire return intervals can enhance habitat diversity.

Additionally, managing the size and shape of vegetation patches helps ensure adequate food and cover for prey species.
