Storms Injure 17 in Mississippi, No Fatalities Reported

Severe storms swept through parts of Mississippi last night, injuring 17 people, with no fatalities reported, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

MEMA has received preliminary damage reports from five counties — Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln, and Wilkinson. Hundreds of homes were damaged, and numerous roads are closed due to debris. Approximately 15,640 residents are without power as utility crews work to restore service.

Two shelters remain open: Lamar County Safe Room at 99 Central Industrial Row in Purvis and Lincoln County Safe Room at 1154 Belt Line Drive in Brookhaven. MEMA continues to coordinate response efforts, with staff deployed to assist local emergency managers. Multiple volunteer strike teams are aiding response activities in Lincoln and Franklin counties.

Residents whose homes sustained damage are encouraged to file insurance claims, take photos of the damage, and report it to MEMA through its website. Those seeking assistance can contact their county emergency management agency, with a list available on MEMA’s site.

MEMA expressed gratitude to volunteers and first responders working to recover from the storm.
