Mississippi assesses damage from severe storms and flooding

Mississippi emergency officials are still evaluating the extent of damage caused by recent severe storms and flooding. As of now, assessments show dozens of homes and numerous infrastructure elements affected across the state, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

The damage includes seven homes destroyed, 35 with major damage, and 55 with minor damage. An additional 54 homes are reported affected. Three businesses suffered major damage, and seven experienced minor damage. One farm faces major destruction.

Infrastructure damage includes four public roads destroyed, six with major damage, and 40 with minor damage. Two bridges are listed as having major damage, and one bridge has minor damage. Three public buildings have minor damage, according to MEMA reports.

Three environmental protection agencies have reported damage, and two rivers are in moderate flood stage. Eleven rivers are in minor flood stage, including the Big Black River near Bentonia and the Biloxi River near Lyman. The Mississippi River system remains in minor flood stage at various locations.

Residents affected by the storms and flooding are urged to file insurance claims, photograph damages, and report their losses via the MEMA citizen self-reporting tool. Officials clarify that this tool is for data collection only and is not a request for financial assistance. Immediate, life-threatening emergencies should be reported by calling 911.
