The Mississippi alligator hunting season starts August 28 at noon for public waters and extends to September 7 at noon. On private lands, the season runs from August 28 at noon to September 21 at 6 a.m., according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
Hunters must purchase a $25 alligator hunting license and a combination hunting and fishing license. Lifetime license holders may be exempt from the fee. Each permit allows the harvest of up to two alligators that are at least 4 feet long, with only one permitted to exceed 7 feet.
Legal capture methods are restricted. Baiting and baited hooks are prohibited. Alligators must be captured alive using a snare, hook, harpoon, or bowfishing gear before dispatching. Firearms are only allowed under specific rules outlined in the regulations.
All hunters with permits are required to submit a harvest report and survey within 24 hours of harvest through the department’s website or mobile app. Even hunters who do not harvest an alligator must submit a report within 24 hours after the season closes.
