Mississippi urges landowners to participate in No Mow May to support wildlife

Landowners across Mississippi are being encouraged to participate in No Mow May, a movement aimed at allowing grasses and wildflowers to grow without interruption during the month. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) emphasizes the importance of leaving these areas uncut.

MDWFP notes that recreational mowing—sudden attempts to clear fields, edges, and road ditches—can disrupt wildlife habitats. These areas serve as vital food sources and nesting sites for birds and mammals during the summer months.

By refraining from mowing, landowners can help provide shelter and nourishment for wildlife making nests and raising young. The department advises residents to consider habitat and wildlife management practices that support local ecosystems.
