Mississippi wildlife officials cite 296 boaters during Memorial Day enforcement
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks concluded a weekend of increased awareness and enforcement over Memorial Day. Conservation officers contacted more than 2,800 boaters across the state to promote safety and compliance.
During the operation, officers issued 296 citations for violations including license issues, inadequate personal flotation devices, and reckless vessel operation. Seven arrests were made for boating under the influence, according to department officials.
There was a noticeable decline in the number of PFD citations compared to last year. MDWFP expressed appreciation to boaters who prioritized safety by having life jackets onboard, emphasizing that such simple precautions can save lives.
As summer activities on Mississippi’s waters increase, the department reminded boaters of safety requirements. These include carrying a USCG-approved life jacket for each person, ensuring PFDs are in good condition, and keeping them accessible. Children 12 and younger must wear a life jacket at all times while the vessel is underway. The department also urged boaters not to operate vessels under the influence.
MDWFP officials said they will continue monitoring boating activity throughout the summer to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all on Mississippi’s waterways.
